Something obvious to discuss for all of us who has had the honour of seeing Yeasayer live.
Which version of which song is your favourite live song?

I have seen them twice live and I must say it´s a very hard pick... At my first gig in Stockholm in March this year I knew the setlist before the show, so I wasn´t really surprised even though the whole concert was magical!
The second time I saw them was in Aarhus in Denmark in July, and I didn´t expect many changes from the Stockholm gig ( even though I met Ira before the show and he said that there were changes in the setlist ) and so I was really surprised when it differed alot! This gig as a whole was even better and is by far the best gig I´ve ever been to in my life...
Oh well, let´s get to the point.. :-P
In the end, when they burst into Wait for the wintertime was the single-best concert experience ever! Didn´t expect it at all, and was the song I missed the most at the Stockholm gig!!! It blew me away with it´s power and aggressiveness!!!

Though I've been a fan of YsR since hearing '2080' on Pitchfork forever ago, their Oslo gig in March was my first live experience. It completely blew my mind (and made me regret weddings, holidays and other 'important' stuff that always seemed to collide with them playing here earlier on ;o) )! We probably saw more or less identical shows in March, mostly concentrating on songs from Odd Blood. What made the concert so special was their energy and presence, more than the songs and how the audience responded. My impression was that they 'geeked out' a bit too much on technicalities and also tried to remove themselves from All Hour Cymbals by changing the old songs quite radically (which is understandable after touring them for so long...).
I went on to see two festival sets this summer, at Latitude and Øya. At Latitude they did this fast, loud set that totally confused the crowd. Setlist-wise it was perfect though, starting out with older songs including 'Tightrope' and finishing off with 'O.N.E' and 'Ambling Alp' (which finally got the crowd moving...). They'd also parted with some of the geeky stuff, playing simpler versions of the songs.
Speaking of short novels, I might get to my point soon..
The best gig was Øya, but that was probably due to external circumstances like having my friends there with me and the whole crowd singing all the lyrics etc. Once again they did a perfect set (in my opinion) and were particularly chatty.
So my favorite live version of my favorite song would be '2080', singing loudly, with my friends, in the sunshine, at Øya. I know, boring favorite song. But love at first listen. Can't have it any other way... And so much better than being the only person knowing and singing the lyrics for '2080' at Latitude Festival... (at least that's how it felt like...) =)

I've only seen them once live so far (and seen two live streams, haha) when they came to Poland this summer and I think my favourite songs live were 2080 and Sunrise. I liked how they differed quite a bit from the original album versions. I already loved these songs but live they sounded even more intense, and magical, and had such a great impact on me, I can't even describe it.

Seeing those live streams is such a teaser. Makes me want to go to even more shows, but oh well - Berlin's coming up!=)
Agreed on "I already loved these songs but live they sounded even more intense, and magical"! Does that mean All Hour Cymbals is your favorite album as well? The one you've listened most to? How about you, bommel? We all seem to have favorite songs (or live versions of songs) from All Hour Cymbals.. I'm curious as to what's aaasayer's favorite?;o)

Actually, Odd Blood was the album that first got me into Yeasayer. So yes, I haven't probably been a fan for as long as some of you are. All Hour Cymbals was a grower for me. I remember listening to it and not thinking much of it until someday I completely fell in love with the first three songs (Sunrise, Wait for the Summer & 2080) and started to wonder how I could've not seen how absolutely amazing they were before. And soon I fell in love with the whole album.
It's hard for me to choose a favourite album, though. It's even hard for me to pick a favourite (or even a few) song as it's constantly changing. One moment, I'll listen to one song on repeat, a few days later it'll be another one. I think it'll be only fair enough if I say I love them equally.

I love that YsR's music is so dynamic and I think this might be the reason why you can listen to it over and over again and still discover new elements, beautiful details or just get a new favorite song every week ;o) Btw, I would really like to hear 'Red Cave' live at some point! They've played it in the U.S. recently, so it might not be too far fetched to expect it in Europe? |

I was lucky to see Yeasayer live twice so far. The first time was at Open'er Festival and my favorite song that night was Tightrope. From the very moment I heard the first notes I knew it was going to be mindblowing, and it was. The song that I really liked a lot the second time I saw them was Grizelda. I didn't pay that much attention to it the first time, but that time it really hit me.

Oh, I'd like to hear 'Grizelda', they haven't played it at any of the concerts I've been to. Anand really sings that beautifully. At Øya they opened with 'Tightrope'. It felt almost like a treat, like they knew Norwegians would love that... =) Will you be going to the Warsaw gig in November?

I am! Can't wait to see them, and it's the second last show they'll do in Europe for quite some time.. Warsaw will be the last.. We should consider ourselves lucky =)
'Final Path', now there's a song I'm not familiar with...? Totally agreed on 'Red Cave'!

Aah, yeah! I've heard it through old youtube clips several times =) And if I'm not completely mistaken they played it at their first Øya set in 2008?! I only saw it as a stream through NRK later on, as I spent the day in a wedding.. Did you ever get the chance to see that concert stream aaasayer? It was there up until March this year, I think NRK forgot it was there... When I checked again in May it was gone... =(
Thanks for reminding me of this song Olga! And nice on the daytrotter link, better than watching lousy youtube clips with bad sound ;o)

I think Final Path was released on the Wait for the Summer single, wasn't it?
Anyway, I completely agree with Grizelda, it sounds absolutely beautiful live. Anand's amazing and I love it when Ira starts singing too.
